Enjoyable Visit-beautiful Wooded grounds
We are in a 40’ class A pulling an Equinox. Narrow roads leading into the campground, but doable. we needed our wooden blocks to level up on site 36. We were on Lakeside Loop and had sewer. I don’t think we would have fit in the dump station. This app says closes in October, but only part of the campground was closed. The lake with new floating dock is nice, lots of different kinds of fish. They have ice and firewood. Extremely close to everything Asheville. We did the Biltmore and the New Belgium Brewery (very cool and free with a great food truck for lunch), and a huge farmers market. We stayed 4 nights and no way to do everything, but we tried! Hosts were nice, self check in, super easy with reservation. I didn’t go in the bathhouse or restrooms. Private and clean. I’m giving a 4 only because the dump station was so narrow and in a curve. Smaller rigs would have less trouble if site with no sewer.

The lake is not really good for swimming d/t all the geese, also no kayaks allowed. That being said...if you are a mountain biker, some of the best mountain bike trails in western Carolina are right here. I live in the area and come here to bike at least once a week..if I get a chance to camp here, so much the better!! Miles of maintained bike trails..kept up by the very active mt bike groups in the area. There are also excellent bike shops just within a couple miles. There are federal signs showing the trails, the bike shops also have detailed ones. Love this campground!

Outstanding!!!
First of all, we do not agree with some of the prior negative commentary about this park. For example, the so called “boomers” are volunteers that work to keep this park beautiful. They make repeated trips around the park to clean and rake every square inch of every site so that the sites are immaculate for your arrival. Unlike other reviewers, we appreciate being warned about bears. And although our cooler is bear resistant as well, we avoid an encounter for ourselves and for others by locking the cooler in our trailer overnight. The bathrooms and showers (with hot water) were immaculate!! The concessionaire that runs the park on behalf of the forest service takes their job seriously and should be commended. Trail systems are within walking/biking distance from the campground, and we found mountain biking to be excellent. The ride to downtown Asheville is less than 15 minutes. We will definitely return. This is the best forest service property we have ever seen.

Nice But.
Place has very nice isolated sites. Some have full hookups. Staff is decently friendly but they give off the vibe of boomers only. They do have a decent beach, the beach is kinda filthy with lake debris. Trails are great and the sites are clean and most are flat. We stayed in 36A, nice site owner than the dumpster next to us. Plenty of place they can put dumpsters that are away from the sites but they don’t. Sites come with picnic tables and fire pits. Sites are blacktop or gravel. One of the days we got a note on our door saying bears spotted. Put up you cooler (my cooler is bear proof) and grill. Okay this is bogus. I’m not putting my cooler in my camper or a hot grill. They are a little uptight about bears. This place isn’t great for kids, does not have a swing set or any kind of play area. There is always a boomer on a golf cart going by to inspect what you are doing. Kinda annoying

Very Nice Campground
Very nice campground. Would have given 5 stars except for the water pressure in the showers which was horrible. The campground and bath houses are very nice. The showers looked so nice we decided to shower there instead of our trailer. Big mistake since the water pressure was so low you basically had to stand against the wall to get wet.

Great Place
Stayed here one night in mid April, hardtimes loop. Nice wooded spot, extremely clean bathrooms. Easy access to hiking and mountain biking trails. Very well taken care of campground.

Bears?
Have stopped here mostly to visit Asheville, it is conveniently located close to the city. We are more travelers than campers for now. Having said that we never make reservations but 3 our if 4 times we were lucky to find a spot. Never have had a problem with staff, most people react nice to me if I treat them with respect and with a smile. We never use bathhouse so I can’t say how clean they are but judging for the number of hosts they probably keep them clean. No Wi Fi and no phone signal but who cares since I have never stayed for more than four nights. Long term would be an issue. Every time we have been warned about bears but never seen evidence of their visit to camp. I wonder if staff got into the habit of telling patrons about bears so everyone is in bed by 9pm if that is the case it certainly works well because I find this place quiet. I don’t want to find out if it is strategy, whatever it is it works for me and for them too

Egh
Naturally pleasant and well-maintained. A big disappointment was the 66' pull thru I got that wasn't built wide enough to pull my pickup and 26' trailer thru. I ended up having to put the truck in 4wd to make it out of the site by driving over the 6x6 ties they used as decorative edging in the ultra narrow, bowed parking area as my trailer tires scraped along the wood.

Nice, Clean
We stayed in summer of 17 and it was not crowded as some say. Sites are roomy and wooded. You have to get your water from a station, usually there are two per loop. Lake was a bit disappointing since it is small and its only for swimming and fishing ( kids swam). Nice location if you want to go to the outlets or jump on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Great Campsite But Can Be Crowded
We (my wife and I) have stayed at Lake Powhatan twice, both times in sites on Hard Times loop and both times in the fall. Sites are shady and private, many sites on the inside of the loop do not have a site directly across the road, so you don't have to be on the outside for a wooded view. Location is close to Asheville but still in the woods. Campsites are well maintained with very clean facilities- the management of the camp is a non-profit and there are plenty of helpful hosts. The only reason that I rated four stars is that on weekends there was not enough bathhouse space when the loop is nearly full. If you go during the week this is a 5 star campground on weekends be prepared for waiting at the bathhouse. We have a small pop-up.
